History; Abby sat on a large rock over looking a river that ran through the large meadow near her home. She often sat here in the early morning when she came to get water for the animals. Taking in the peaceful sounds of the wildlife waking up and the calm rush of the water was just what she needed to start the day. Back at the house her father and brothers would be up soon and ready to train. All of the swords slashing and shields banging could get pretty annoying. They were all either warriors or training to be one. Her two oldest brothers Kaleb and Braden have been warriors for awhile now. Men around here go out to their first battle at age 17. It is kind of their rite of passage. Her two younger brothers are twins and will go to their first battle in a month. They are very excited to join our father on the battlefield. I better get back.Abby thought to herself. Mom will be starting breakfast soon and I still need to get the eggs for her. She push up off the rock and took one last glance at the peaceful meadow before heading home with the heavy bucket of water. Abby helped her mom tend to the animals and the chores. There was a weekly market in town where they had a booth to sell medicinal brews and ointments. Her mom, Brenna Willow ,taught her all about herbs and plants and what they can do. She truly enjoyed it. But her favorite part was going out and scavenging for them with her Thylo, Duchess. She found Duchess as a kitten in a cage at the market. Some jerk thought he could make some money by selling the kitten after killing her mom for hide. Luckily Abby's dad was with her that day. Not many people say no to him, especially if you are taking advantage of the innocent. This kitten needed help, so Abby’s dad rescued her and named her Duchess. Abby and Duchess would be gone for hours scavenging through the woods. Honestly, their adventures would end when Abby found a huge oak tree to stop and read for awhile. Especially the huge oak tree with the low hanging branches known to be the best place to find tintoberry root for her dad's favorite tea. She would hang her satchel on a branch, sit down between the protruding roots and start to read. After scouting for any dangers nearby and finding none, Duchess would jump up on one of the wider branches and lay down. The book was about a ship captain that went on daring adventures to new lands and met an array of people. Abby loved these types of books. Always a new adventure on the next page. She always wanted to travel to distant lands and learn about new ingredients for the brews she and her mom would make. Not to mention meeting new people. There had been talk of a newly discovered land with bountiful hills, meadows and streams; oceans so deep you swear your touching the middle of (insert world name here). She longed to go to a place like that. She sighed. “We will go on our own adventure someday, Duchess.” She said solemnly. Dutchess purred in agreement. A few weeks later her dream came true when Abby, her mother , and Duchess were in town getting flour for an azulberry pie. They were headed down the dirt road towards the general shop when Abby noticed a crowd down at the docks. Out in the bay there was a large ship with huge white sails. Dingies were chartering people to land. Near by there was a man announcing that they were looking for more crew members. Abby perked up. “I know that look.” her mother said. Abby quickly turned away. “What look? I don't have a look.” Her mother smiled. “ I know that look because I had the same look when I was your age.” Abby glanced at her. “Really? But you seem so happy.” Brenna smiled at that. “Of course I am. I found where I belong. I love being a wife and mother. But you are still young and need to find out who you are.” Pulling out some SE and putting it in Abby's hand she said “ Go live that adventure you read about in your books” wiping tears out of her eyes, Abby squeezed her mom in a tight hug. “But what about the boys and dad?” “ Oh you leave them to me. You're dad was young once too believe it or not.” She said with a smile. “He will understand. You have Dutchess to keep you safe and everything I taught you about the apothecary. You can get a job on the ship and then set up your own shop somewhere.” Abby hugged her mom once more, both of them had tears running down their cheeks. “I love you Mom. I promise to write you as often as I can. Tell the boys I love them.” With that she let go and jumped on Dutchess heading towards the dock. Finally starting her own adventure.
